Kanawha Falls is in Glen Ferris, an unincorporated community in Fayette County, West Virginia. It is located on the east bank of the Kanawha River, just two miles southwest of Gauley Bridge and Cathedral Falls.The waterfall is formed by a diagonal sandstone ledge across the river about 1 mile downstream from the confluence of the New and Gauley rivers. It is 24 feet high. |
Kanawha Falls had a post office which opened on March 26,1856 and closed on November 2, 2002. The building still stands. |

Below; A low concrete overflow dam built in 1920 along the crest of the falls directs part of the flow to an electric generating plant on the western (right) bank of the river at the community of Glen Ferris. The plant was rehabilitated beginning in 2010 and fully returned to operation in 2012. The community of Gauley Bridge is 2 miles upstream from Glen Ferris along U.S. Route 60. On the eastern (left) bank, a community named Kanawha Falls is about 0.6 mile downstream. |
